Message reactions and how to use them

Reactions let you respond to a message with an emoji, without sending a full reply. They're a quick way to acknowledge, agree, or express a feeling.

Adding a reaction

  1. Open a chat.
  2. Tap and hold the message you want to react to.
  3. Choose an emoji from the reaction bar that appears.
  4. The reaction will be added to the message.

Removing or changing a reaction

To remove a reaction you've added:

  1. Tap and hold the message again.
  2. Tap your existing reaction to remove it, or tap a different emoji to change it.

Who can see reactions

Reactions are visible to all participants in a chat. In one-on-one chats, everyone can see who reacted and with what emoji.

Notifications for reactions

You can choose whether to receive push notifications when someone reacts to your message. Manage this in the chat's settings.

Reactions vs. replies

Use reactions for quick acknowledgments. Use replies (by swiping on a message or using the reply action) when you want to respond to a specific message with a full text message. Replies preserve context and show which message you're responding to.
